I just started reading this new book called The New Rebellion Handbook and so far it’s fantastic. On the back of the book it says:Beloved child of the Most High God. your hour has come. Awake from your slumber for the Living God is calling you. Fix your gaze on Him and He will set your heart on fire. Take up your full armor and join this holy uprising. It’s nothing less than a revolution of the heart, mind, and soul. And it begins with you.
“God chose you to be His people so I urge you now to live the life to which God called you.” Ephesians 4:1 NCV
The first chapter of the book is about worship. The first bible verse that caught my eye was Micah 6:8,
“But He’s already made it plain how to live, what to do, what God is looking for in men and women. It’s quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, And don’t take yourself too seriously — take God seriously.“MSG
It’s a simple verse, but if you read the passage before it, it has a powerful meaning.
In Micah 6 God is asking the Israelites what He did to them to deserve their disobedience. Then he explained to them all He’s asking of them is Micah 6:8. The Israelites missed the point. They made sacrifices because that was what was required to cleanse them of their sins, but they overdid it. Some even tried to offer up their firstborns like for the pagan idols. It reminded me of some christians today. They get caught up in dressing a certain way and being holier than thou. When what God wants is for us to be fair and just to the people around us, to be merciful and compassionate, and to spend time with Him.
In essence this is worship. Our worship of God doesn’t have to be extravagant or showy. It just has to be real and sincere. Our worship will connect us with what we are worshipping. Christ-followers’ worship connects them with Christ. In this generation Christ’s warriors are worshippers. His worshippers are here to advance His Kingdom.
“Your inner worship of Jesus will transform your outer life as well. A heart set upon God’s Kingdom will bring your life into stark contrast with the false gods worshiped in this world — money and power, sports and entertainment, youth and beauty. These are the idols that the New Rebellion scoffs at. They cannot compare with the splendor of God.”
God is calling His people to worship and everyone’s worship is unique. Some of the sincerest forms of worship I’ve seen have been at metal concerts. Sometimes my best time with God is just me, Him, and my itunes playing at home. Worship doesn’t always have to involve music, sometimes it’s giving something up because you know it’s not pleasing to the Lord or helping someone because it’s the right thing to do. It goes back to Micah 6:8. Just worship.
